Gifts for Mom, Picked by WIRED
A useful gift guide should solve a real problem: what to buy Mom when you want the present to feel personal, not like a last-minute guess. This one draws on products WIRED staffers have given their own mothers, tried themselves, or would like to receive. It ranges from skin-care gadgets and practical totes to a screen that brings a digital calendar into the home.
The suggestions work for Mother’s Day, birthdays, Christmas, Hanukkah, and other family gift occasions. If you’re shopping for someone whose tastes you know well, that range helps. If you’re worried she already owns the obvious choice, the staff’s first-hand experience gives you a better starting point than a generic list.
Updated October 2026: New additions include Nora Fleming stoneware, jewelry from Gorjana and BaubleBar, Rumpl’s Gametime Puffy Blanket, The Zero Proof’s Pampered Pregnancy Pack, and Mina Baie’s Emmy Diaper Bag. Links and prices have also been checked.

Skin and scalp care
Red-light devices make confident promises about wrinkles, acne, and hair growth. The personal results here are more measured—and that distinction matters. After more than a year with an LED mask, the writer hasn’t seen much change in wrinkles, but has noticed brighter skin and faster improvement in acne and scars with regular use. HigherDose’s face mask is a favorite because its three straps let it rest on the head instead of clamping down.
The same brand makes a red-light hat for the scalp. The writer reports that regular use improved scalp comfort and hair health while managing a sensitive scalp and hair-pulling; a battery pack makes it wearable while moving around. That’s a strong personal endorsement, though it doesn’t establish what other users should expect. For more on the category, see WIRED’s guides to [LED masks and red-light therapy](https://www.wired.com/story/led-face-masks-and-red-light-therapy/) and [red-light therapy for hair growth](https://www.wired.com/story/best-red-light-therapy-for-hair-growth/).

A tote for the everyday haul
The writer describes being in a “massive tote” phase: some days mean carrying things for both herself and her four-year-old; other days call for a small belt bag. The Yardsale Day Bag has served as a flight personal item, gym bag, and aerial-studio bag. Its waterproof base suits trips to a splash pad, while a flexible magnetic divider splits the main space into two sections. There are interior side pockets, though none fit her large Owala bottle. She owns the 30-liter Butter version; a 20-liter model is available too. The 30L costs $184 at [Yardsale](https://cna.st/p/2dJkVVomr493wZpxNmNZuXEaketYsYCxbPNBSSdqBnA5FRcc4F9XBupcv3GAn8L7U3Jrrs44ZguqbeyeJWcCEyKtjXKoS5K5VhygPuUcbuxFrJZt9eEc6mJDiR3ZcypDf7VGrtdiLjGXggU1MvAAPhiXwmaegHRuwN6s5qiuu2isDVnpKr5e4wchRsznnLSNaUpj5gPwT5H8Qxipf8sV5vezSi61PNiy86pR4HU88bgFJjZskxU33Tgwx34SZWoyUqs2SrodG1vSP8oewChkqCx7t58hveSiHf7byuSqn6XYNDdiaf9ap15QrWPK2cenCtkWT5VkVghh9zBduHufdgsQYwyAnap4REHuLmJed95ykuuL6rQJ5wDenFiZaftV8ojZEuVKreabirjHg98o9QdS3eq4wPPUE).
For a more polished option, Alex Mill’s Perfect Weekday Tote is $175 at [Alex Mill](https://cna.st/p/V1rbZZiYcJc3kVz9YX8vVv2JuLrL64iFipHaQQ6MNB3kUugsQRzXBLq55rqVioLZeJdL9Me3GK4YwCwnjTadP83HHKtB9rHcQbXqJf5g9zBp7LPrS7EGxNpimPXwWBKm1kvbrWzZnkqMyxnxdk85Jgyt68U27UP6s1Z2iyajaf46BUX9En8S89yFMBnt45Q5BbfDyQ8oTJSZqbjuwzVS6GxC5ommtFdbtz9K2dKXZE2fLHrLaq6eq8er65FcyrUZKMokaEQUSAYEJAFfYxW1Bg96KGrpFe2tcUrKQgrkRRqsSirpm7iRQ6x2aE1oGb85ixioFcfBHmdBwnfhLRRkMmgc2b1bUaDD456wJwVpdxzk8u9Jmj1MMxyhNbBSsgG1XL4uNXzwtJGHCamV1sTh8QzdFecuf49d4EokEvYYL5TQKCQLRgSNHSAgzsPyvx6JmoMR9AuqAQca). It’s coated canvas, comes in several colors, and can be personalized with hand-painted initials or “mom.” Snaps let the sides expand or fold inward. The tradeoff is simple: it has no extra pockets.
A shared calendar on the wall
The Skylight Calendar 2 puts a digital calendar on a household screen. It’s aimed at the planner who wants the family schedule visible in the room, rather than tucked away in an app. The listed price is $350 at [Amazon](https://cna.st/p/3j63gbMkR4nGMuSRMwguPdV3kwEyuAFfzkGMagPn5Tp6UyGxDx76MQCy9Hs5g9at2xDeuSEdi4WemNKtnFUg3WGa44VkNaunQKsLj6hg3JkcCt9BA8SteRXc4FYXvAudVLJ1HCMyVzX5mzRFYHMmw2UH8RLQTZQfDnYVChHABEqZrA3sBHRo6EihyTxYszF3zgLyKsHCQYEm86CSbH2onAVTgfaaf1uqhGYMGdbBJ1eXdhUi8mocwgiusSyVdFrR2rVicQ9L4yTZwJDvvWw6huAmhxsiCyrmY2pLaKknvHqunwu3UBWGmuvABjdDeMAhqjzvLGCo4pDBQUq3WUHcT3UDifiYXAqT4a4t1A4rwLawYXsLqML7Sc8ECfJS). For the Hostess Mom
Nora Fleming’s serving pieces solve a familiar hosting problem: how to make a table feel festive without dedicating cupboard space to a different dish for every occasion. Choose a stoneware base—such as a square platter, cracker tray, baking dish, utensil crock, or salt and pepper set—then add one of the hand-painted ceramic “Minis,” sold separately. The designs cover holidays, sports teams, mah-jongg, barbecues, and more.
Each base has a small opening for a Mini, secured with a rubber stopper. I tried the cracker tray with a harvest accent, and it looked as if the decoration had always been part of the dish. I can swap it for a Christmas tree next month. That makes this a gift with a built-in follow-up: if Mom likes the system, there are more Minis to give later.

Personalized Jewelry
The point of personalized jewelry is the story it carries. I used to think of department-store jewelry as the default family gift; now, as a mom, I’m more drawn to pieces that mark the people I love. (I’ll still happily take extra earrings for my stack.)
Gorjana lets you add charms to necklaces or bracelets, including initials and birthstones. I paired my son’s initial charm ($48) with the $65 Wilshire Adjustable Necklace. BaubleBar’s $78 Toi et Moi ring offers another route: choose two birthstones. I picked mine and my son’s. His sibling-to-be will also have a red birthstone, so the ring should continue to represent both children.

For the Sports Moms
This is a practical gift for anyone who spends long hours on bleachers or turf sidelines: Rumpl’s Gametime Puffy Blanket packs a wearable blanket into a padded stadium cushion. My son plays on three teams, so I’ve spent plenty of cold evenings outside. Heated jackets and [HotHands](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Hand-Warmer-10-Pair-Value-Pack-HH210PK36/202564069?) didn’t keep me as warm as this water-resistant blanket.
It opens to 50 by 70 inches, with a front clip so you can wear it like a cape. At a tournament, it can also serve as a picnic blanket or a place for younger siblings to sit and read. Folding it back into the seat is straightforward; without the blanket packed inside, the cushion is one inch thick. It comes in six colors, including options to match a child’s team or school.

If She’s Going Non-Alc
A sampler makes sense for someone curious about nonalcoholic drinks: it lets them try several styles without committing to a full supply of one. The Zero Proof’s Premium Pampered Pregnancy Pack costs $175 and includes options ranging from nonalcoholic wine to cocktail substitutes. I tried it while pregnant, when cocktails were off the table, and liked the range. People have plenty of reasons to explore alcohol-free drinks, of course.
For a lower-cost starting point, two favorites were Château del Ish Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Espumante ($20) and Lapo’s Non-Alcoholic Melograno Mule ($20 for four).

For the Reader
For a reader who likes both books and gadgets, Kobo’s Libra Colour combines an e-reader with a color screen and optional stylus. The listed prices vary by seller and bundle: $258 at Amazon, $260 from Kobo, or $330 with a stylus. Kobo’s remote is a separate $34 add-on.

The section opens on a digital wall calendar: it syncs with Google Calendar and other digital calendars, so the family schedule can be checked on a dedicated screen instead of a phone or Alexa. The writer prefers Skylight Calendar 2, which adds to-do lists, meal planning and recipes, and works as a digital photo frame. Photo display and some features, including meal planning, require a subscription; the writer considers that worthwhile for the bundle. A $140 Skylight Buddy can put chores on a child’s own device.

For Readers Who Want More Than a Kindle
The best e-reader gift depends on what she likes to read on, but Kobo makes a strong case for itself. The Kobo Libra Colour costs less than Amazon’s Kindle Colorsoft, and adding a $70 stylus turns it into a digital notebook. I also prefer Kobo’s approach to annotations: You can write directly on the page, while Kindle confines notes to pop-up margins and boxes. Kobo sells a page-turn remote for $34; pair it with a pillow stand and she can read hands-free. I gave my mom a similar stand, and it’s become an easy marker of wherever she last settled in with a book.

If she’s committed to Kindle, the new 12th-generation model comes in a purple Ube color for $149. I’m more drawn to the Kindle Aluminum, though I wish its price were lower. Amazon is also introducing the Kindle Click page-turn remote for $35. For the pillow stand, the Lamicall Tablet Pillow Stand Holder is listed at $40, down from $46 (13 percent off).
A Diaper Bag That’s Easier to Search
Deep backpacks can turn finding one small item into a rummage. Mina Baie’s Emmy Diaper Bag solves that problem with a wide, shallow shape that makes the contents easier to see. I’ve used the midsize Emmy Midi to carry snacks, toys, and spare clothes for my four-year-old, even though I’m not currently packing diapers.

The Emmy Midi is $189 from Mina Baie; the larger Emmy Full is $199 from Babylist. If you’ll be carrying bottles or pumping gear, the Full may be the better fit. The bag is made from vegan leather and can be worn as a crossbody, tote, or backpack. Mina Baie sells a changing kit separately for $59.
A Lighter Pregnancy Pillow
I’m expecting again, and I’m still looking for a pregnancy pillow that doesn’t make bed feel more cramped. During my first pregnancy, a large, firm body pillow was uncomfortable, heavy, and awkward to fit beside my growing belly. The Wildbird Pregnancy Pillow has been a much better match so far: It’s slim and light, with enough softness to support my belly without making it hard to settle into a position.

Wildbird sells the pillow for $88 and suggests it can also provide support postpartum. I haven’t tried those positions yet, so that part remains an open question. Still, it looks good on the bed and feels like a gift an expecting parent might actually want to use every night.
