Character.AI is adding two free chat styles with distinct aims: PipSqueak 3 for general roleplay and ShortSqueak for brief, informal exchanges. The company is also introducing (c.ai) lite, a paid plan priced below its existing (c.ai+) subscription. Taken together, the changes expand the free style choices while making some premium chats and account features available through a lower-priced tier.

Two styles for different conversations

PipSqueak 3 becomes the default for new chats. Character.AI describes it as an improvement over PipSqueak 2 in reply quality, chat continuity and formatting consistency. Those are practical areas for roleplay: a style that keeps better track of a conversation may need fewer corrections as scenes develop, while cleaner formatting can make replies easier to follow. The announcement provides no benchmark scores or technical details about how the improvements were measured, so the comparison is qualitative.

Existing conversations will keep their selected style. That means users can try PipSqueak 3 with a new chat without changing the behavior of ongoing ones. PipSqueak 2 and Rawr remain available in the Legacy menu for people who prefer their previous settings. The arrangement also gives users a way to compare styles in practice, though results may depend on the character and conversation.

ShortSqueak is tuned for quick, casual conversation. Its stated characteristics are short replies, fast banter and informal roleplay. That makes it a better fit for users who want a conversational back-and-forth without long responses to brief prompts. Character.AI says the style draws on requests for the feel of some of its earlier chat styles; it doesn’t provide further details about the model or its training.

The distinction between the two styles is straightforward: PipSqueak 3 is presented as the general-purpose option, while ShortSqueak aims to keep exchanges compact. Both are free, and the announcement says neither has special usage limits after rollout. Users can choose a style based on the pace they want rather than pay to access either one.

Availability and compatibility

The rollout starts with subscribers: (c.ai+) and (c.ai) lite users are scheduled to see both styles in the picker first. Free users begin receiving them later the same day, with access expected for everyone within a few days. Character.AI says the styles were shaped by user feedback and tested with community members and trusted testers, following the approach used for LongSqueak.

(c.ai+) subscribers get Style Control for PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak. Both styles also work with Lorebook. These details matter for people whose chats depend on setting a particular response style or using Lorebook alongside a conversation. The announcement doesn’t describe how Style Control works or specify any differences in Lorebook behavior between styles.

What the lite plan includes

(c.ai) lite costs $4.99 USD per month or $2.49 USD per week, with prices varying by region. Its main addition is a daily allowance of messages on premium styles, including DeepSqueak and LongSqueak. Once that allowance runs out, the chat switches back to PipSqueak 3. The company hasn’t stated the size of the daily allowance, so subscribers will need to check the plan in their region for the terms that apply to them.

The plan also removes banner ads and reduces interstitial ads, offers less slow mode during busy periods, and adds app customization such as wallpapers and bubble colors. For memory, lite includes extra pins and a Memory Usage bar. These features give the plan several kinds of value, but the announcement doesn’t put a number on the premium message allowance or explain how much additional memory users receive.

Free users keep unlimited messaging and get PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak at no extra cost. The distinction is that premium chat styles and the other lite features require a subscription. Character.AI describes (c.ai+) as its full experience, with unlimited premium chats, no ads and the complete memory suite. That makes the main choice between the free styles and the added access, controls and customization offered by paid tiers.

(c.ai) lite is available now. Subscribers should find the new styles in the picker as rollout reaches their accounts; free users are expected to receive them over the next few days. The most useful comparison for users will be conversational: try each style for a few turns and see whether its reply length, continuity and tone suit the kind of chat they want.

(c.ai) lite is available through Character.AI’s subscription page. Users can also share feedback in the (c.ai) Discord.
